Recently a sculpture has been placed in the Kröller-Müller Museum
sculpture garden, a sculpture that will only be finished after several
generations have passed: the EuropaHamer of the German artist Andreas
Rimkus. It is a forged hammerhead weighing more than 25 tons with a
gingko tree planted in the eye, the tree requiring at least 75 years to
turn into the ‘handle’ of the hammer. This work is one of seven hammers
to be placed on the various continents. In addition to being a sculpture
covering the entire world, it is also a song of praise to the traditional
blacksmith’s art. As well as the Europe hammer in our sculpture garden,
the hammers for Africa (in Togo) and for Asia (in China) are already in
place. This book describes the process by which the sculptures were
created and the background to the project.
