Christiaan Bastiaans has ‘the human shortcoming’ as theme in his work.
He travels to war zones and places where terror rules, looking for
beauty in a world where you are not at home. His film Club Mama Gemütlich
plays in the no-man’s-land of a conflict zone: part field hospital, part
missionary post, part nightclub stage. Jeanne Moreau wanders around
there, consoling and healing like some mystical ghostly apparition.
Fascinating. The book pays a great deal of attention to both work and
film. Bastiaans gives shape to one of the most difficult tasks to be
undertaken by an artist: the portrayal of uprooting, desperation and
exclusion.
